- Most significant birth chart influence: Natal planets at 17°-23° of cardinal signs (Aries, Libra, Capricorn, Cancer)
This month’s New Moon, and the first for 2024, occurs on 11th Jan at 20° Capricorn, ruled by Saturn. The luminaries are co-present with Mars and Pluto and trine Uranus, so we can expect an undertone of these planets in this next lunar cycle. If you have planets in Capricorn or especially between 17-23° or at these degrees of the other cardinal signs, this month’s New Moon energy may be more palpable for you.
Capricorn is the sign of Mars’s exaltation, one of the best signs for Mars to be in (see my article ‘Mars in Capricorn‘ for a more in-depth look at this transit). Mars is high energy and can be erratic and unstable but in this structured environment of Saturn’s domain it can channel and focus that energy in a productive, efficient and more stable way. Here it’s functional, focused and persistent, and indicates taking steady incremental action to build what’s practical and sustainable in the long run.
So there’s a potential for this New Moon to be really supportive for honing in on actions you want and need to take regarding your intentions. What plans need to be implemented, what structures or foundations created, for you to achieve your goals in the month or even the year ahead? What resources do you need, and how can you work efficiently in the process? These are all questions to consider for this New Moon period.
What I think is also positive is that Mars is emerging from under the Sun’s beams, which means it’s coming into its own light again, like a Mars reborn. You can see it in the sky once more. This emergence is considered a strong and powerful moment for a planet, and like a recovery after a period of weakness. I think that’s really fitting for the start of a new year, where your thoughts may be turning to what you want to achieve or change in the year ahead such as making New Year resolutions or setting intentions to start something new, or take different approaches.
With the New Moon in Saturn’s domain, there may be an undertone of seriousness to this lunar cycle. Saturn is the planet of hard work, deep contemplation, responsibility, and doing what’s necessary. This together with Mars’ ‘Let’s get going’ quality, and Pluto in the mix, may bring a sense of needing to keep things real, grounded and honest. As Pluto is in the last degrees of Capricorn, there may also be a sense of winding down or completing the work that Pluto has been doing for the last 15 years here for you. But it may still require some ‘digging deep’ to uncover and finally resolve any issues that are holding you back or limiting your sense of empowerment or progress, and this may be an influence too. Be cautious about overwork or pushing too hard or too quickly though.
Aspects to Jupiter and Uranus are also in play which bring an injection of hopefulness, excitement, visions for a fresh new start, and the vista of possibilities. It may help bring opportunities or open doors to start seeding the plans, structures or processes to move towards what you want to achieve.
Uranus at 19° Taurus, makes a trine with the New Moon, bringing an electric and stimulating feeling, which will be great for motivation. With Uranus there’s always the possibly of unexpected happenings too, so be prepared to grab any opportunities or gifts if they come your way out of the blue. Uranus indicates pushing forward in a new direction, breaking out of old patterns or habits. It stimulates the impetus to take unconventional or independent oriented approaches. So letting yourself think outside of the box, or working to give expression to your own authenticity will be helpful. This trine with Uranus together with the exalted Mars influence is potentially helpful in providing motivation to embrace stepping outside your comfort zones.
Jupiter at 5° Taurus is making a trine aspect to Mars, lending support to take those practical actions for intentions and plans you have, bringing some lovely optimism and a willingness to set new goals to work towards. It helps expand your horizons, and ecourages bringing meaning and purpose to what you want to do this month. Helpful opportunities or solutions could arise to help with this. New wisdom or knowledge may become accessible during this time which helps steer your way.
There’s a lot of earth energy being pulled in here – both Taurus and Capricorn are earth signs – so this New Moon is about steady down-to-earth planning, progress and achievements, and the sense of needing to put effort and focus towards something that’s solid and sustainable. It may be important to considered the long-term impact of your intentions and actions this month. But that doesn’t mean it won’t be exciting or inspiring at the same time.
